那滚滚的波涛，浩瀚的海水，既有巨大的浮力，又产生极大的阻力。在这“双重”压力下却不乏潜水好手，如各种鱼类、海豚、海豹和海龟等，然真正的潜水冠军当推号称“海中霸王”的抹香鲸，它以屏气法潜入水下可达1小时之久，最大潜水深度达 2200米，而且出入自如。
我们知道，海洋哺乳动物和人一样，也是用肺呼吸的。一般而言，人的屏吸时间只有1—2分钟，潜水深度不超过20米。即使是经过专门训练的潜水员，在潜水前呼吸数分钟纯氧，再挂上20多千克的重物，也只能潜到70多米的深度，与抹香鲸相比真是“小巫见大巫”了！
