七里湖位于淮河右岸，嘉山县东北边境，跨江苏省盱眙县一隅，为郯庐断裂带局部凹陷洼地积水，受洪泽湖抬高水位扩展形成。南起津里，北至旧县（现女山湖乡），湖区长１３公里，宽２～５公里，面积５８平方公里，其中东南汊称水厂湖，长４公里，宽２公里，南纳陡涧（亦称钟落涧、石坝河，或津里河）、涧溪雨水，入湖总来水面积８５０平方公里，主要属丘陵区；西北有女山湖水利枢纽沟通女山湖，池河来水，进入女山湖、七里湖，已是河湖一体，一并于洪山头注入淮河。黄泛以前，七里湖承受丘岗雨水，积数日即退；黄泛以后，淮、黄倒灌，湖底淤高约３米，湖口泄水道淤高约４米，一般积水数月、半年不退。现在受洪泽湖水位影响，终年为湖。常年水位１３．０米时，湖面积４６平方公里。具蓄洪、灌溉、航运、水产等综合效益
