Fei Xiao tong defines traditional Chinese rural society as "society ruled by rite", because he used the definition of "rite"in both broad sense and narrow sense, his concept of "rite-ruled society" has a double meaning----society with no law and traditional society in its general sense.
费孝通先生把传统中国农村社会概括为“礼治社会”,但由于他是在广义与狭义两个不同的层面上使用“礼”这一概念,因此他的“礼治社会”也就相应地具备了双重的含义无法的社会和一般意义上的传统社会。
