2000年1月，中国著名作家王蒙将获得首届“《当代》文学拉力赛”的10万元大奖捐给人民文学出版社，倡议设立30岁以下的文学新人奖，在文艺界和社会上引起了极大的反响。为更好地培养文学新人，鼓励青年作者的创作，人民文学出版社决定设立春天文学奖，每年奖励一位30岁以下的文学创作成就显著的青年作者，在次年的新春颁奖同时出版“春天丛书”，专门出版该年度得奖和获提名的青年作者的作品集。
经过王蒙、聂震宁、雷达、曹文轩、刘玉山、常振家、王干7位评委的推选，首届春天文学奖授给了河南作协推荐的青年女作家戴来。
