补充资料:通艺学堂
      清末戊戌变法运动前夕由改良派创办的学习西学的学堂。创办人为刑部主事张元济和京官陈昭常、张荫棠、何藻翔、曾习经、周汝钧、夏偕复等。他们于光绪二十三年正月(1897年 2月)呈文总理各国事务衙门,请予提倡,并发给同文馆书籍。总理各国事务衙门官员张荫桓热心赞助,曾写信向各省督抚募捐,张之洞、王文韶等都有资助。学堂初名"西学堂",于同月开馆。校址在北京宣武门,租赁民房为校舍。招收学生四、五十名,多系京员及官绅子弟。聘请教习两人,一人为常驻教习,一人为帮教习,分别执教。所设课程,先习英文及天算舆地,待学生英文精熟以后,再各就性质所近,分门专习兵、农、商、矿、格致、制造等学。
  
  是年冬,总理各国事务衙门据张元济等呈请,奏准俟三年期满,援案可对学堂教习酌加奖叙;其成业学生,准仿照广方言馆学生例,可由同文馆调考录取。学堂名称也正式定为通艺学堂。严复曾在这里讲学,"宣读西学源流旨趣,并中、西政教之大原","京官之好学者,相约听讲,不期而集者数十人"。
  
  戊戌变法运动时,光绪帝召见张元济,曾询问通艺学堂情形,勉励张元济说:"要学生好好地学,将来可以替国家做点事。"在此期间,管理大学堂大臣孙家鼐奏请将通艺学堂列入中学堂。
  
  不久,戊戌政变失败,张元济被革职,通艺学堂也被迫停办。张元济把通艺学堂的全部校产造册移交给京师大学堂。
