多年生草本,高20-70厘米。根木质,粗厚,呈块根状,须根绳索状,常具圆形或长圆形的块很有时成串生长。茎直立,单一或分枝,近无毛或疏被倒向柔毛。基生叶多数,有长柄,柄长7-30厘米,疏被柔毛或近无毛;叶片三角形或卵状三角形,长5-10(25)厘米,宽4-7(15)厘米,基部心形或戟形,先端钝尖或渐尖,边缘具粗大圆齿;表面被具节刚毛,背面被星状毛及具节刚毛;茎生叶与基生叶同形,但较小。轮伞花序多数,腋生,每轮多花密集;苞叶三角形或披针状三角形;苞片三全裂,裂片线形,与萼等长或稍长,密被开展的白色具节缘毛,花萼管状,长约1.4厘米,宽约5毫米,萼齿截形,先端有刺尖,外面脉上被具节刚毛;花冠紫红色或淡紫红色,长约2.5厘米,外面唇瓣密被星状毛,筒部无毛,花冠筒中下部有毛环,上唇边缘有不整齐的尖齿,里面密生髯毛,下唇3裂,中裂片较大,倒心形,侧裂片卵形;后雄蕊花丝基部在毛环上方具向上的矩状附属器;花柱分枝为不等的2裂。小坚果顶端密生长绒毛。花期7-8月,果期8-9月。
