   特殊星系的一类。简称蝎虎天体。因蝎虎座BL而得名。20世纪60年代以前,蝎虎座BL被认为是一颗光变不规则的特殊变星。1968年,证认出蝎虎座BL是射电源VRO42.22.01的光学对应体。性质与蝎虎座BL类似的天体称为蝎虎座BL型天体。其主要特点是:发出强烈的射电、红外和X射线;有猛烈的光度,时标为几小时到几月;连续谱高涨,光谱中没有谱线,或谱线很弱;各波段的辐射都是非热辐射,偏振度很大且有快速变化。对一些有谱线的蝎虎座BL型天体的观测表明,它们都有较大的红移。蝎虎座BL型天体的这些特性说明,它们是银河系以外的天体,是遥远的河外星系。
