【通教】
(术语)天台所立化法四教之第二。说万法当体即空无生无灭(当体即空无实生实灭)之理,为使二乘及钝根之菩萨得但空之证,使利根之菩萨得不但空即中道之证而施设之三乘教也。不要断灭万法,说万法当体为因缘生,而当体即为空无生,故空之中自有不空之义而含中道之理,此名不但空,亦名当通含中。利根之菩萨,证此含中之中道而为别教圆教之人也。佛之通教,正为此人。故以通教为大乘之初门。然而通者共通之义,有二义:一者三乘共学之义。藏教之三藏四谛,十二因缘,六度,所学各异,而此教之三乘,三乘共学谛缘度,皆见当体即空之理。但以断见思之正使,兼侵害习气,自行化他共行,而分三乘之别,故名通。二者单就菩萨有通前通后之义。通教之菩萨有利钝二种,钝根之菩萨与前之藏教同证但空之涅槃,利根之菩萨,闻之而会不但空之义,遂闻后当体即空之说,而通于别圆二教所诠中道实相之理,为别教圆教之人。如此就菩萨有通前通后之义故名通教也。此二义中,佛之通教本意为使利根之菩萨,得通后之益也。四教仪曰:“通前藏教,通后圆教,故名通教。又从当教得名。谓三人同以无言说道,体色入空,故名通教。”
