法国社会评论家及文学评论家，早期的著作在阐述语言结构的随意性及对大众文化的一些现象提供类似的分析。在《神话学》(1957)书中分析大众文化。《论拉辛》(1963)在法国文学界造成轰动，使他成为敢与学院派权威相抗衡的人物。他后来有关符号学的作品包括较激进的《s/z》(1970)、研究日本而写成的《符号帝国》(1970)，以及其他一些重要的作品使他的理论在1970年代受到广大的注目，并在20世纪有助于把结构主义建立为一种具领导性的文化学术运动。1976年在法兰西学院担任文学符号学讲座教授，成为这个讲座的第一位学者。
