苏-27重型战斗机，北约代号“侧卫”(flanker)，可以算是近十年来最大红大紫的战斗机了。不论航展上展示优异性能，还是实战中与对手一决高下，大出风头。在北海的一次巡逻中，苏联飞行员为了赶走一架入侵的p3c反潜机，用“侧卫”的一个垂直尾翼将对方的发动机短舱割开，实在是爽死了！
苏-27是优秀的第三代战斗机(苏联和俄罗斯的分代方法称之为第四代)，就飞机本身的性能，尤其是机动性，绝对是第三代中的佼佼者。苏-27“侧卫”的诸多改进型，如著名的苏-30、苏-34、苏-35、苏-37，都一次又一此次引起世界的轰动。
在60年代，西方国家的以线传操纵系统为核心的第三代战斗机陆续研制成功，苏联的步伐也紧紧跟上。当时苏联科研机构推出了诸多重型空中优势战斗机方案，从改进的米格-29到图波列夫机翼吊挂发动机的方案，各家设计局都出尽全力。最终苏-27的前身t-10试验机独占鳌头。
随后t-10又发展出众多改型，比如起落架后移、雷达舱加大、主翼翼型变动等等。最终产生了苏-27，84年正式装备部队。苏-27刚刚服役就振动了世界航空界，因为它的先进气动布局和强大的机载武器火力(挂载10枚空空导弹)是前所未见的。随后在西方航展上苏-27精彩的“普加乔夫眼镜蛇”机动动作更是令西方世界惊叹不已。
