| 敬老院 home for the aged 为老年人养老服务的社会福利事业组织。又称养老院。西方国家的养老院通常由地方政府或慈善机构主办，接收靠福利救济或低收入的老人。中国的敬老院是在农村实行“五保”的基础上发展起来的。中国农村乡镇普遍办了敬老院；城市街道也有兴办敬老院的。敬老院的收养对象主要是五保老人，有条件的敬老院还接收享受退休金待遇的自费老人。坚持入院自愿、出院自由的原则。许多地区还为优抚对象的孤老兴办光荣院，吸收符合条件的对象入院。敬老院贯彻集体事业集体办的原则，入院老人的生活费、医疗费丧葬费等的供给，均由集体承担，统筹解决。贫困地区的敬老院，集体组织供给有困难的，由国家给予补助。敬老院的宗旨是敬老养老，把安排好老人的物质生活和文化生活放在首位。敬老院经常组织老人参加一些力所能及的生产劳动和适合老人特点的文娱体育活动。有的乡镇把敬老院办成老年人的活动中心，为乡、镇社区的老人提供福利服务。
