属汉藏语系藏缅语族，语支未定。分布在中国湖南、湖北和四川等省。使用人口约20万(1982)。分北部和南部两个方言。语言特点（以北部方言为代表）：有21个声母：p、 ph、m、w、t、 th、l(n)、堭、堭h、s、z、慯、慯h、怱、嶃、j、k、kh、嬜、x、γ；有 25 个韵母：i、a、o 、u、嚕、ie、ia、iu、ai、au、ou、ui、ua、嚕i、嚕e、iau、 uai、媯、、愘、i、u愘、u、o嬜、io嬜，其中u、u愘、io嬜3个韵母只出现在汉语借词里。有 4个声调：55、53、35、21。名词有领属格，人称代词有单、复数和领属格，动词有主动态和被动态，有17种情貌范畴。句子语序为主语-宾语-谓语。领属性修饰语在名词之前,描写性修饰语在名词之后，动词、形容词的修饰语在中心词之前，补语在动词、形容词之后。南部方言有26个声母，比北部方言多 5个浊声母，有18个韵母，另有12个韵母专拼汉语借词用。
