本文通过对班级教学的发展历程的回顾，对小班化教学产生的历史背景及其研究历史和现状的剖析，认识到：小班化教学产生于班级教学，其研究之目的就是为了既保留班级教学的优势，又克服班级教学所固有的弊病；国内外只以班级规模的缩小或其他某些策略来研究小班化教学，分析小班化教学的效益和效果，可以肯定是片面的，它所得出的结论也必然具有一定的片面性。

小班化教育是一种班级人数较少（不多于28人）、有利于学生的全面和谐发展和个性充分发展的教育组织形式，是世界发达国家和地区普遍采用的基础教育发展模式。
小班化教育宗旨是因材施教，因为小班比较容易实施。另外就是班级管理应详细制订，给的知识可以相对多一点，细致一些。班化教学中，学生在课堂内所平均占有的时间成倍增加。这样，在课堂上师生之间、学生与学生之间有更充分的时间进行讨论和交流，有利于师生之间的互动。这种互动是师生共同发展的动力。课堂教学中是否实现师生互动，是新课程理念对课堂教学的要求。在互动中，学生在教师的指导下，达到自主、合作、探究性的学习，充分发挥主体的积极性和创造性，提高学习质量，促进学生主动、健康的发展。在这样的教学氛围下，学生有更多的机会质疑、表达自己的独立见解以及动手实践，有利于他们综合素质的提高。小班化为课程改革创造了极为有利的条件。
