美国航天员，空间飞行次数最多的航天员。1930年9月 24日生于旧金山。1952年从乔治亚工程学院航空工程专业毕业后任海军试飞员。1962年试飞战斗机时曾创造飞行高度25公里的世界纪录。1962年被选为航天员。他在1965～1983年间曾驾驶"双子星座"号飞船、"阿波罗"号飞船和航天飞机各进行两次太空飞行，累计飞行时间 835小时。后任航天员办公室主任、约翰逊航天中心管理主任。
