      古典戏曲评论用语。这个概念来自诗论,意为本然之色。明代一些戏曲理论家把本色的概念引入古典剧论,但在内容上已有很大变化。首先,本色被用来阐明艺术与生活的关系。徐渭认为生活中就有本色与相色之分,本色即正身,相色即替身,戏曲作家应该"贱相色,贵本色"(《西厢序》)。这与汤显祖在《焚香记总评》中强调的"尚真色"用意相近,都要求戏曲艺术反映的生活是天然的没有雕饰的真实。以后,晚明的一些戏曲理论家力图从戏曲反映生活的特征,论证本色的问题。臧懋循提出,戏曲创作必须作到"人习其方言,事肖其本色,境无旁溢,语无外假"(《元曲选后集序》),才能艺术地反映纷纭复杂的生活。王骥德也指出,戏曲以"模写物情,体贴人理"为其特点,"一涉藻缋,便蔽本来"(《曲律》)。他们把真切、质朴、自然的审美标准与戏曲摹拟生活的特点结合起来,对本色的内涵作出较好的诠释。
  
  其次,本色是对语言的要求。徐渭反对传奇创作中那种文仿经义、语用排偶的"时文气",主张"句句是本色语"。因此,他十分赞赏《琵琶记》中《吃糠》、《尝药》、《筑坟》、《写真》等折的语言,誉之为"从人心流出"。总之,他要求传奇作家继承真切、质朴、自然的南戏语言的传统。凌濛初也批评了传奇创作中的两种倾向:以藻绘为曲,如同把唐诗的排律混入《陌上桑》、《董妖娆》等汉魏乐府中,是不伦不类的;以鄙俚为曲,又如同以三家村学究的口号、歪诗比作《康衢》、《击壤》等远古歌谣,是十分可笑的。他心目中的本色语言,是"不施脂粉"、"出之天然"的"人间一种真情话"(《谭曲杂劄》)。
  
  臧懋循、王骥德都从戏曲反映生活的特征,论述了戏曲语言的本色。臧懋循在两篇《元曲选》的序言中说,戏曲要描写各色人物和各种事件,语言的取材较之诗词就广泛多了,经史子集和佛道二藏上的语言都可供采摘;但必须"断章取义,雅俗兼收,串合无痕",达到元曲的"不工而工"的妙境。王骥德在《曲律》中却说,本色就是通俗易懂,主张本色与文藻兼而用之。但是,施文藻,忌太文;用本色,忌太俚。"雅俗浅深之辨,介在微茫"。他以为汤显祖的《南柯记》和《邯郸记》,语言上"掇拾本色,参错丽语,境往神来,巧凑妙合,又视元人别一蹊径",才是可演、可传的上品。
