美国非太阳观测天文卫星的一个系列，英文缩写是HEAO。从1977年8月到1979年9月共发射3颗。它们是70年代最大最重的空间观测台，主要任务是对脉冲星、黑洞、类星体等各种河外宇宙天体辐射源的X射线、γ射线和宇宙线进行高灵敏度和高分辨率的探测和研究，重点是发现和观测宇宙X射线源。卫星为6～8面柱体,长5.8～6.7米,直径2.4～3米,重2.7～3.2吨，运行在高度450～550公里、倾角 22.8°～43.6°的近圆形轨道上,周期为93.5～94.5分钟。这些卫星采用三轴稳定的姿态控制系统，由星跟踪器、速率陀螺仪和反冲发动机组成（见航天器姿态控制）。卫星上有两个磁带记录器,记录速率为128千比特/秒，总存贮量为1.72兆比特。"高能天文台"1号记录到约1500个X射线源,其中大多数是遥远的星系团，使 X射线天文的视野扩展到了河外天体。它取得了可能的黑洞（圆规座X-1）的数据;首次观测证实矮新星天鹅座SS是一硬 X射线源；另外发现一个高能背景辐射，表明在星系间可能广泛存在着热气体，其总质量可能比星系中的恒星总质量还大。"高能天文台"2号又名"爱因斯坦"X射线天文台,能指向所拟观测的任何对象。其主要仪器是一台200公斤重的大型掠射式X射线望远镜，它已拍摄到数千张X射线源的X射线像，包括一些快速的爆发过程。"高能天文台"3号的任务主要是探测天体的γ射线和宇宙射线等高能辐射。通过 3颗卫星的探测，人们获得了关于脉冲星、类星体、爆发星系和黑洞的有价值数据，并相对地确定了宇宙的年龄。
