《苕溪渔隐丛话前集》卷十九引《刘公嘉话》载：唐人贾岛做诗，得“鸟宿池边树，僧敲月下门”两句。起初“敲”字想改用“推”字，犹豫不决，用手做推、敲的动作，无意中碰上了韩愈，就向韩愈说明原委。韩愈认为用“敲”字好。后以“推敲”比喻反覆斟酌、考虑。
