The degree adverb "no souls" and "no root" in Nantong dialect express a meaning of certain high degree,which are equal to degree adverb "very much" or "quite" and the like in mandarin Chinese both in meaning and in grammar.
南通话程度副词“没魂”、“没根”表示程度高,在语义上,相当于普通话程度副词“非常”、“十分”;在句法上,南通话程度副词“没魂”、“没根”具备与“非常”、“十分”相同的句法功能,但又可以单说单用,普通话程度副词不具备这种功能,这是“没魂”、“没根”的特殊用法,“单说单用”其实是“没魂”、“没根”的实词用法未完全虚化的一种表现;在方言本字的考证上,“没魂”、“没根”与古语词“们浑”有一定的渊源关系。
