波兰国家军事博物馆的建立始于1920年由最高指挥官marshall jozef pilsudski发布的一条法令.建馆初期,和波兰国家博物馆共用位于podwale街的建筑物,1934年部分搬迁至国家博物馆为其特别建造由tadeusz tolwinski设计的新馆中.战后该馆于1946年重新开放,1993年在czerniakowski fort 9号新增了katyn展区和波兰军事科技展区.
