印度共产主义运动活动家之一，曾任印度共产党总书记。1909年 2月20日生于印度北方邦坎普尔市的一个医生家庭。毕业于阿拉哈巴德大学化学系，获理学士学位。青年时代参加反英民族运动，曾在拉合尔协助建立印度斯坦社会共和协会。1929年因第二次拉合尔谋叛案被捕入狱。1930年获释后,在坎普尔从事工会工作。1931年加入印度共产党，任印共北方邦的组织员（相当于中央特派员）。1933年当选为印共中央委员，1936年任印共政治局委员。曾担任印共机关刊物《民族阵线》周报编委。1940年再次被捕，1942年获释。1943～1944年在印共中央总部工作，后到旁遮普省做党务工作。在1943年5月印共"一大"上当选为中央委员。1948年2月印共"二大"当选为政治局委员。1951年3月当选为中央委员会书记处书记。在1951年10月当选为总书记。在担任印共总书记期间，曾率代表团出席苏共"二十大"、"二十一大"和"二十二大"，参加两次各国共产党和工人党代表莫斯科会议，4次访问中国。1962年1月13日因心脏病逝世。
