属汉藏语系、壮侗语族、侗水语支。分布在中国贵州省的三都水族自治县及其邻近的榕江、荔波、独山、都匀等县，使用人口约 28万 (1982)。不分方言。在壮侗语族诸语言中水语的声母最复杂。如三洞话有71个声母，清塞音有不送气和送气的两套;有小舌音；浊塞音有b、d、妱b、妱d两套;鼻音有3套,如m、怰、妱m等;擦音除分清浊外，还有前喉塞浊擦音，如嶃、j、妱j等；还有相当数量的腭化声母和唇化声母，如tj、tw等。有55个韵母，由长元音或带韵尾的长、短元音构成。有8个韵尾:-i、-u 、-m、-n、-嬜、-p、-t、-k。有8个调类：6个舒声调和 2个促声调。虚词和词序为表达语法意义的主要手段。量词可单独加在名词前面。名词或量词的修饰语在名词或量词后面（但数量词在名词前）。代词修饰量词时要加 to51（的）字。句子的语序是主语－谓语－宾语－补语。合成词中，复合词的词素结构与词组的组合规则相同，派生词的附加成分以前加居多。有民族固有词与借词并存并用的现象。1949年以前有用于占卜，择日、看风水的符号,称为"水书"(见图);有类似汉字倒写、反写的形式，又称"反书"。这些字约有 300多个，广大水族群众多不认识。长期以来，水族地区使用汉文。
