This paper mainly presents a literature review of the two approaches to the syntax of Chinese relative clauses in the last ten years: the movement approach and the no-movement approach.

On the basis of studying Chinese English learners’ understanding competence and productivity of relative clauses and ability of processing sentences, this paper finds that there is a great difference between producing procedure and understanding procedure, which leads to a conclusion that the more complicated the sentence is, the more difficult the productivity is.

This is an empirical study on Chinese learners acquisition of six types of relative clauses inserted in matrix subject position and matrix object position,with the purpose to test the predictions of previous research hypotheses such as Accessibility Hierarchy Hypothesis(AHH), Perceptual Difficulty Hypothesis(PDH)and SO Hierarchy Hypothesis(SOHH).
