据报道，英国海军将用两艘四万吨级的新建航空母舰替换目前使用的三艘“无敌”级航空母舰。未来 航母（cv(f)s）将于2012年开始服役。它们可配载50架固定翼飞机和直升机。使用皇家海军的“海鹞” fa.2和gr.7式飞机可形成“联合兵力2000”，进行不论是以陆地或航母为基地的作战。更长远地看，还 会用“未来型舰载飞机”取代这些飞机。
