中国东汉宫廷中贮藏档案、典籍和从事校书、著述的处所。位于洛阳南宫，修造年代不可考。建筑高大华丽，最上层高阁十二间，四周殿阁相望，绿树成荫，环境幽雅。章帝、和帝以后，为宫廷收藏图籍档案及修撰史书的主要处所。汉代诸帝十分重视东观所藏典籍、档案的校阅和整理。永元十三年(101)春,和帝刘肇往东观"览书林，阅篇籍",并"博选术艺之士以充其官"。此后，邓康、马融、李胜等人，先后以校书郎、校书郎中、东观郎等职多次值东观"典校秘书"。其中规模最大的一次是安帝永初四年 (110)，诏令谒者刘珍及五经博士校定东观所藏五经、诸子、传记、百家艺术，整齐脱误，是正文字。后又辟为近臣习读经传的地方。
东观的丰富收藏，为汉代史的修撰创造了极其有利的条件。自和帝时起(公元92)，班昭、刘珍、李尤、刘毅、边韶、崔寔、伏无忌、蔡邕等名儒硕学，先后奉诏于东观撰修国史，历时百余年，广泛采用本朝档案典籍，陆续撰成《汉记》143篇 (因修撰于东观，世称 《东观汉记》)。后遭董卓之乱，破坏严重。
