Shigu Academy in Hengyang city ,which gains resounding fame when a lot of famous scholar give lectures there, is called together to be the Four Famous Academies in Song Dynasty with Suiyang, Bailudong and Yuelu Academy.
衡阳市石鼓书院与睢阳、白鹿洞、岳麓书院并称宋代“天下四大书院”,许多名家来此讲学而声名鹊起。

原址在湖南衡阳县北石鼓山。唐元和年间李宽在山顶建屋读书。宋至道年间李士真在此创建书院，景年间仁宗赐名石鼓书院。《文献通考·学校》列为宋初四大书院之一。南宋末书院毁于战火，元明时兴时废。清代重建。抗日战争中被毁，现已辟为公园。
