宗密(780~841)

    中国唐代僧人,华严宗五祖。因常住圭峰兰若,世称圭峰禅师。俗姓何。果州西充(今属四川)人。少通儒书。元和二年(807),从遂州道圆出家,同年从拯律师受具足戒。此后常随澄观受学。长庆元年(821)游清凉山后,回鄠县(今陕西户县),闭关于终南山草堂寺。旋迁丰德寺。其间专事传法、著述。后入草堂寺南圭峰兰若,从事禅诵。大和年中,文宗诏入内殿,问佛法大意,赐紫方袍,敕号大德朝臣士庶归信者甚多,宰相裴休常从受法要。卒后,唐宣宗追谥定慧禅师。宗密初承受荷泽宗禅法  ,精研《  圆觉经  》,后又从澄观学《华严经》,故融会教禅,盛倡禅教一致。又因早年学儒,故也主张佛儒一源。宗密的现存著述有《华严经行愿品疏钞》、《注华严法界观门》、《华严经法界观科文注》、《原人论》等。
