1.旧时立于墓道前记载死者生平事迹的石碑。以汉杨宸所题《太尉杨公神道碑铭》为最早。据宋高承《事物纪原．吉凶典制．神道碑》载，秦汉以来，死有功业，生有德政者皆可立碑。晋宋之世，始盛行天子及诸侯立神道碑。 2.指墓碑上记载死者事迹的文字，为文体的一种。
