张世文长期致力于社会学、人口学、人口统计学、社会调查学的教学与研究工作。20世纪20年代末至30年代初，在河北定县从事社会调查工作，搜集和整理了有关社会风俗、文化娱乐、卫生教育、农村人口、家庭手工业等方面的大量资料，为李景汉所著《定县社会概况调查》(1933)一书的出版做出了重要贡献。在教学和研究工作中，他强调理论要联系实际，特别是要联系中国的社会实际，反对本本主义。他认为，西方社会学的理论只能作为借鉴而已，要通过对中国社区史、社区志的研究，探索社会学中国化的道路。
