释惟恭。不识何许人。出家于荆州法性寺。慢上吞下。亲狎非类。或时暂暇。则诵经文。期升安养。然而酒徒博侣。交集于门。虚诳云为曾无虚日。同寺有僧灵岿。迹颇类之。荆人戏而嘲曰。灵岿作尽业。惟恭继其迹。地狱千万重。莫厌排头入。恭闻之曰。我既作之。焉能避之。然赖净土教主。悯我愆恶。拔我涂炭。讵有地狱入之哉。唐乾宁二年。恭病且死。人未之知。岿时出寺可百步。路逢少年六七人。衣装鲜洁。手执乐器。若龟兹部。岿疑其俦。适其寺之乐佛也。问其所来。少年曰。来自西尔。又曰。吾之来也有待焉。又曰。惟恭上人寺且何在。岿指其寺曰。此其寺也。此其房也。少年闻之。其意甚喜。乃于怀中出一金瓶。瓶中取一莲华。其合如拳。渐而开之。其大如盆。叶叶之下。迭出异光。光彩交映。如聚数灯。望寺驰之。未达其寺俄失焉。岿乃大惊。不敢回顾。亦不形诸言。次日既至寺门。遽闻钟声。又见寺僧咸集门下。问其故则曰。惟恭夕且死矣。或曰。恭死之时。寺僧有梦。莲华光相。以临其室。久而西去。岿乃具言所见闻者增信焉。闾里之人。或以其事勉岿。岿因感悟。遂守名节。以成高迈云。
