全书词语的排列以第一字笔画多寡为序。每一词语均举出例证，注明出处。一词语有多种意义的则分别解释。有些词语往往与元明小说中所用的相同，在解释中则引为旁证。戏曲词语中有些行话，市井土语和少数民族语言与一般普通词语不同，也都一一分别注明。不过有些不常用的字没有注出读音，是其缺点。书中更没有列出资料引用目录，也未免美中不足。戏曲中有些常见的成语,作者另辑为"戏曲成语汇纂"一卷附于书后,可为研究成语者参考。
