巴西诗人。生于葡萄牙的阿尔图市。父亲为巴西人，母亲是英国人。 8岁时随父母来到巴西。1763年前往葡萄牙入科英布拉大学攻读法律。毕业后在葡萄牙贝雅市任法官。1782年回到巴西任米纳斯州维拉里卡市法官。1786年任巴伊亚州高级法院院长。1789年因参与反对州长被捕入狱。1792年流放莫桑比克，曾担任当地政府公职和律师，直到去世。他的著名作品是自传体抒情长诗《迪尔塞乌的玛丽莉娅》(1792)，用牧歌的形式倾吐对玛丽莉娅的爱情，表达了对理想的恋人的眷恋，反映出对没有痛苦没有罪恶的和平宁静生活的渴望。长诗的第二、第三部分于1799、1812年出版，是葡萄牙语文学中具有浪漫主义倾向的代表作品。
