高黎贡山北段种子植物种类十分丰富,共记载野生种子植物172科,778属,2514种及302变种(亚种),是植物多样性最为丰富的地区之一。

横断山脉中最西部的山脉，山高及宽度均较云岭、怒山为小。高黎贡山北段位于西藏自治区境内，称伯舒拉岭，山体作北偏西走向。进入云南贡山独龙族怒族自治县后，称高黎贡山，呈南北走向，平均海拔约3500米。其中，以北段较高，海拔4000米以上，尾端约2000余米。因怒江切割较深，故相对高度甚大,山势陡峻而险要,是地壳抬升后受河流分割而成的断块山地，多为变质岩组成,下部有大面积的岩浆岩分布。腾冲境内高黎贡山的西坡有近代火山群分布，反映现今地壳活动仍较剧烈（见腾冲火山群）。在保山、腾冲交界处，位于怒江、龙川江谷地之间的高黎贡山上部，1983年建立高黎贡山自然保护区，属国家级自然保护区。保护区的植被为暖温带针阔混交林,北起泸水县南部,南迄腾冲、保山南部，呈狭长状，面积约1234平方公里。因地势高峻，又处于西南季风的迎风部位,故降水量大,森林生长茂密高大。一般谷底为干热河谷型植被，中部为阔叶林，海拔3000～3500米的山顶为针阔混交或冷杉、铁杉纯林。主要保护植物有垂枝香柏及珍稀动物长尾叶猴、白眉长臂猿等。
