岩石中含有磁性矿物，在地球磁场的影响下，岩石形成时就受到磁化，从而保存了它们形成时间和地点的地球磁场方向的古地磁记录。通过对岩石所记录的古磁场的倾向和倾角的测量，可以计算岩石形成时地球磁极的位置。
人们从各个大陆不同时代的地层里测出几千个古磁极的位置，连接任一大陆不同时期的古磁极的线，就是那个大陆的视极移曲线。将各大陆视极移曲线比较，调整的结果表明，在2亿年前的所有大陆曾是一块共同的大陆——泛大陆。
