Based on the comparative study of the eastern and western terraces taken shape in lower Pleistocene in Shenhu Bay,it is shown that there exist moving faults since Holocene in the area,which provides with new evidences for the interpretation of symbiotic origin of both the palaeontological wonders,ancient forest and ancient oyster reef.

北深沪湾海底古森林遗迹自然保护区
国务院1992年批准建立的保护湾海底古森林遗迹自然保护区，位于福建省晋江市深沪湾内，面积3100公顷，其保护对象为海底古森林、杜蛎礁遗迹、海蚀变质岩等，这种类型的保护区不仅在我国独一无二，即便在世界上也是少有的。保护区的建立对于研究古地理、古植物、古气候以及海洋变迁具有重要价值。
保护区濒临台湾海峡，地理结构奇特，名胜古迹甚多，自然风景优美，社会经济人文条件优越。区内有埋藏于潮间带经历7800多年历史的油杉树遗迹20多棵；又有大片成长于数千年前的壮蛎礁，典型的海蚀红土陵岩、卵石油滩岩和现代堆积中的细沙丘；还有可展示古生代、中生代、新生代等漫长地质历史演变的独特、典型、出露良好、多种多样的海蚀变质岩。保护区的建立，可为研究古海洋、古地理、古气候、古植物，研究台湾海峡地质构造与海平面升降运动及太平洋地质板块运动，研究泉州古港海外交通史提供可靠的科学依据。
长期以来，福建泉州、晋江一带有过"沉东京，浮福建"的古代传说，且影响深远。海底古森林和壮蛎礁遗迹的严格保护，将有利于深沪湾和台湾海峡的地质构造运动和地震的研究。
7000年前的海底古森林和近万年前的壮蛎礁等珍贵的"自然古迹"，以及保护湾海陆变迁的生动史话，无论对科学工作者或是游人都具有极大的吸引力，因而保护区既可对群众进行科普教育，使群众特别是青少年获得科学知识，又可为发展海滨旅游业提供重要的资源。
