奖项介绍：
国际奥林匹克化学竞赛1968年由波兰、匈牙利、捷克斯洛伐克三个东欧国家发起，第一届竞赛在捷克斯洛伐克首都布拉格举行，只有三个发起国参加。以后除1971年外，国际化学奥林匹克竞赛每年一届，轮流在各参加国举办。
国际奥林匹克化学竞赛的参加国逐年扩展，从最初的几个东欧国家，1974年开始发展到西欧、美洲、亚洲，一直到全世界范围，美国1984年参加比赛，中国1987年开始参加。
举办这一竞赛的目的是强调化学的重要作用，激发学生对于化学的兴趣，提高学生的思考与创造能力，同时也是为了在青少年中选拔优秀人才。竞赛内容包括无机化学、有机化学、物理和1984年起增加的生物化学。竞赛题分理论题与实验题两部分，理论题60分，实验题 40分。按总分成绩，授予金质奖章、银质奖章、铜质奖章和奖状。此外，还有特别奖，授予答案有创造性者、绝对优胜者和最佳参赛者。每个国家的代表团由两名团长和四名学生组成，参赛学生年龄不得超过20岁。竞赛的工作语言是英语、法语、德语和俄语。
国际化学奥林匹克竞赛的评选工作由评委会负责，评委会由所有参赛国代表组成，主席由主办国选出，副主席由上届主办国选出。评委会下设执行秘书处，在非竞赛期间代表评委会开展工作。评委会的职责包括指导和监督竞赛按规则进行；审查参赛者的参赛资格；制定评分标准；评卷；确定最后名次、奖章等级的和奖金数目等等。
