中国新闻记者的节日。1931年日本帝国主义发动侵略中国的"九一八"事变后，国民党统治区的新闻界提出"开放言论、保障人权"的强烈要求。南京国民党政府为缓和新闻界的激愤情绪,1933年9月 1日，由内政部、军政部分别通令各省、市政府，各军队及军事机关"保护"新闻从业人员。1934年 8月，杭州市记者公会通电全国新闻界，倡议公定9月1日为中国记者节。江苏、湖北、河南、广东等省和北平(今北京)、天津、上海、汉口等市的记者公会先后通电赞同。这年的9月1日, 北平、太原、长沙、南昌、厦门、青岛等大中城市的新闻界举行庆祝活动，要求南京国民党政府实行1933年通令，切实保障新闻记者的安全，维护言论自由。这是开展"九一"记者节纪念活动的开始。此后，国民党统治区新闻界每年9月1日都要开展纪念活动，后来扩及海外华侨新闻界。中国共产党领导的解放区，在抗日战争期间也开展纪念活动。延安《解放日报》(延安)和新华通讯社曾多次发表纪念文章，把"九一"记者节作为新闻界总结工作、提高修养、改进业务、团结战斗的日子。中华人民共和国建立后，全国新闻工作者同全体劳动人民一起纪念"五一"劳动节，9月1日不再举行活动。台湾的新闻界仍以9月1日作为记者的节日。
