    利用激光束作为热源的热切割﹐工作原理与激光焊相似。激光切割的温度超过11000℃﹐足以使任何材料气化﹐因此在激光切割时﹐除熔化外﹐气化也起著重要的作用。有些材料(例如碳和某些陶瓷)的激光切割过程则纯属气化过程。金属的激光切割多採用大功率二氧化碳连续激光器。切割时﹐喷射惰性气体流﹐吹除切口熔化金属﹐可使切口光洁平直﹔喷射氧气流可提高切割速度。激光切割的切口细窄﹑尺寸精确﹑表面光洁﹐质量优於任何其他热切割方法。几乎所有的金属材料都可以用激光切割﹐可切割的厚度从几微米的箔片至50毫米的板材。但激光切割设备投资很高﹐主要用於12毫米以下各种厚度的不锈钢﹑鈦和鈦合金﹑难熔金属和贵重金属的精密切割﹐也可用於塑料﹑木材﹑布匹﹑石墨和陶瓷等非金属材料的切割﹐如木材加工业已用激光切割胶合板﹑刨花板﹐服装行业用以大量裁剪衣料。另外﹐激光切割还适合於某些特殊用途﹐如宝石轴承打孔﹑外科医生用激光作为手术刀等。
