茶树育种早期鉴定(early appraisal oftea breeding)提早对育种材料性状进行评定的一种方法，是为缩短育种年限加速选择进程而采取的初选鉴定。茶树育种所需的时间长，从50年代起，各国相继研究主要性状的早期鉴定，现已取得成果。早期鉴定的根据是:幼龄茶树的性状表现与成龄茶树性状存在相关性，侧定幼龄茶树的相关性状，便可预测成龄茶树的产量、品质和抗性表现。此法也适用成龄单株的鉴定。运用早期鉴定能及早选出有希望的个体或类型，淘汰低劣的个体或类型，缩短育种年限和工作t，是育种技术的一大进步。 品质早期鉴定的研究开展得较早，同时，品质较之产t、扰性称定，已建立了较为可靠的鉴定方法和选择程序，如鉴定绿茶用的各种小型简易制茶机，鉴定红茶用的发醉性侧定，测定发酵性比之单独测定茶多酚，更能反映红茶品质。在日本，运用发醉性鉴定确立红茶品质的早期鉴定法，其步骤是:①在实生苗·床中采摘各个体的1一2个茶芽进行发醉性测定，把发醉良好的实生苗定植到本圃中去;②在定植2一3年的第一次选择时，于夏季进行发醉性侧定及微量制茶，以鉴定发醉性及成茶香气特征;③在定植4一5年的第二次选择时，进行徽量制茶，认真研究品质内容;④在系统比较试验及适应性试验阶段，用小量制茶法(1000克鲜叶)鉴定成茶品质，侧定茶多酚含量。 产t早期鉴定尚缺乏系统的方法，其主要原因是:①种子生活力的差异影响苗期生育;②作为无性繁殖用的枝条不同部位影响无性苗的生长;③幼龄个体间立地条件的差异;④茶树生长特性未充分表现出来;从而降低了早期鉴定的准确性。已经提出的一般方法是观测幼龄茶树的树势、芽叶性状、年生长量(高幅度、分枝数)定型修剪枝叶重等。从生理方面探求幼龄期的干物质生产与成龄期的实际产量相关研究也已开始进行。东非提出一种鉴定幼龄期根冠比预侧产量的方法，即在选择优良无性系时，侧定三、四年生茶树的根系和树冠比值，借以预侧产量高低，斯里兰卡采用反复选择法，根据产量和其他性状表现，认为应予淘汰的植株是:①采摘面很乱的;②芽数少的;③超直立型，生长速度慢的;④采摘后发育差;⑤叶片小;⑥芽梢小.节间短的;⑦开花数多的;⑧产量低的。
