生物信息的种，存在于DNA（脱氧核糖核酸）或RNA（核糖核酸）上。各种生物都有由特异碱基序列构成的DNA或RNA。这些遗传物质有一定的化学结构和特殊的空间结构。 每个DNA分子都由两条长链盘旋成为规则的双螺旋结构。这两条长链的外侧由脱氧核糖和磷酸组成，长链之间的每个横档由一对碱基组成。每对碱基通过氢键相连并相互对应，即腺嘌呤(A)一定与胸腺嘧啶(T)配对，鸟嘌呤(G)一定与胞嘧啶(C)配对。这些碱基严格的配对的规律以及它们在长链上的有序排列蕴藏了全部遗传信息。由于碱基对排列顺序不同,就构成了DNA分子的多样性。DNA通过复制转录合成互补的RNA，把遗传信息编码在mRNA的碱基序列中，进而通过细胞的蛋白质合成机构把mRNA翻译成特异的蛋白质。虽然每个多细胞生物所有的细胞都来自同一个细胞──受精卵，具有同样的遗传信息，却可以有肝细胞和神经细胞等的分化，这是由于在发育过程中遗传信息在转录和翻译上严密有序的调节控制形成的。同样也可由DNA、RNA的碱基序列的突变选择和积累演化出形形色色的生物种类。
