口端位,弧形。口裂斜。侧线不完全,有时断断续续。背鳍无硬刺,其起点稍后于腹鳍起点,与腹鳍基底相对,尾鳍分叉,上下叶等长。体侧具淡黄色宽纵纹,从鳃孔后至尾鳍基有一条较宽黑色条纹。
小型鱼类,生活在泥沙底质和水流畅通的水田、渠沟中,群居。摄食无脊椎动物。有特殊的分批产卵习性。
