董寨自然保护区位于豫鄂两省交界的大别山北坡，是北亚热带和暖温带的天然过渡带。气候温和湿润，森林植被丰富，野生动物物种繁多。尤其是野生珍稀鸟类的分布，是在同一经度或同一纬度的保护区最多的一个。经过长期的资源调查和综合考察，到1996年为止，保护区内分布有鸟类233种，其中国家重点保护的36种。目前，保护区的技术人员又发现了红点颏、小鸦鹃、白琵鹭和草号鸟4个本区新种，除红点颏外，均属国家重点保护鸟类。
