体型与梅花鹿相似而稍小，但颈、躯体和四肢更为细长，显得格外矫健。雄鹿具角，第一眉叉自基部向前侧平伸出，与主干几乎成弯弓形。毛被黄棕、红棕或棕褐色，背中线黑褐色。背脊两侧各有一列白色斑点，仔鹿的斑点尤为明显，成年鹿冬毛斑点不明显。
栖息在海拔200米以下的低丘、平原地区。性喜群居，但长茸雄鹿多单独行动。坡鹿喜集聚于小河谷活动，警觉性高，每吃几口便抬头张望，稍有动静便疾走狂奔，几米宽的沟壑一跃而过。取食草和嫩树枝叶，也喜欢到火烧迹地舔食草木灰。发情交配多在4-5月份。在发情期，雄性之间为独霸雌鹿群而发生激烈格斗。孕期7-8个月，每胎1仔。坡鹿分布范围狭窄，数量很少。
