稻田复种轮作中种植的以新鲜绿色体肥田的作物。稻田绿肥有秋播越年生长的冬季绿肥，有利用作物茬口间隙增种的短期绿肥和稻田水面养殖的水生绿肥等。主要种类有紫云英、茹子、黄花苜蓿、蚕豆、豌豆、肥田萝卜、箭筈豌豆、黄豆、田菁、柽麻、饭豆、泥豆、红萍、水浮莲等。70年代稻田种植各种绿肥面积就曾达到980万公顷，其中以紫云英面积最大，占稻田绿肥总面积的70%左右。
稻田种植绿肥对提高水稻产量和培养地力起着重要的作用，特别是豆科绿肥，具有固氮能力，含氮量较高，碳、氮比率小，翻压入稻田中腐熟分解快，释放铵态氮的量也较大，在氮素用量相同的情况下，比其他有机肥如堆肥、人畜粪、草塘泥、凼肥等对当季水稻提供的有效养分多，增产效果大。稻田绿肥产量高，以紫云英为例，一般每公顷可产20-40吨青体。
绿肥为新鲜有机物质，翻压后需经一定时间腐熟分解，方能供给水稻吸收。因此，以绿肥作基肥时，除刈割出一部分外，并应在水稻插秧前7-15天左右翻压较为适宜。一般豆科绿肥因期含氮较多，磷、钾含量少，施用时，常需与其他磷、钾含量较多的肥料配合使用。将绿肥用作饲料，转化为牲畜粪便，则更为经济。
