   鲈形目鮨科石斑鱼属的通称。又称过鱼。至少有60种。一般体呈长椭圆形,侧扁;头长大于体高;口尖,上颌骨后端达眼后缘下方;上颌前端有圆锥齿2对,两侧外列牙一行较大,内侧为绒毛齿;下颌齿疏松多行,排列不规则;犁骨与腭骨具细齿;前鳃盖骨边缘具弱锯齿,鳃盖骨有3个扁平棘;背鳍鳍棘部强大,与鳍条部相连;胸鳍宽大,位低;腹鳍位于胸鳍基部下方;臀鳍具3鳍棘,第二鳍棘强大;尾鳍圆形;体被小栉鳞;侧线完全达尾鳍基部。为暖水性中下层鱼类,广分布于太平洋、印度洋和大西洋,中国产31种,主要分布于南海和东海。
   石斑鱼的颜色和大小,因种类不同而变异甚大。多栖息于岩礁底质海区,一般不结成大群,常年均可捕到。石斑鱼肉质佳美,为南海名贵经济鱼类,活鱼鲜销价格昂贵,并出口。
