当游水时，身体左右摆动，但看起来却像尾巴上下挥动着往前游。通常眼睛偏向右方的称为鲽鱼，偏向左方的称为鲆鱼，但是其中也有不少例外。
鲽鱼通常躲在沙中，只留眼睛在外面，而且体色会随周围环境而变，极不容易被发现。
