飞虱科昆虫的1种。在中国北起黑龙江、内蒙古,西到新疆,南至广东、广西,东达沿海各省和台湾均有发生。为害水稻、麦类、玉米、甘蔗、高粱、谷子等禾本科作物和杂草。
体小型,连翅长3.5~4毫米。雄虫体黑褐色,仅头部基半与前胸背板淡黄色;雌虫全身为淡黄褐色,仅中胸背板的两侧区为暗褐色;雌、雄虫前翅均微有淡黄褐晕近于透明,在两翅合拢的接缘中部有一短条状的黑褐色翅斑。
此虫在北方1年发生4~5代,南方7~8代,以若虫在寄主上或根际、落叶下越冬。耐低温,若虫在5℃以上即可继续取食生长,但不耐高温,至30℃以上发育便缓慢,甚至引起滞育和死亡。成虫多产卵于植株下部叶鞘内。成、若虫常栖息在植株下部取食。成虫有明显的趋嫩绿、趋密习性和趋光性。随季节1年要转换几次寄主。
成虫用口器刺吸寄主液汁造成危害,还传播水稻条纹叶枯病、黑条矮缩病、小麦丛矮病和玉米粗缩病等病毒病,产生间接危害。有些病毒病(如水稻条纹叶枯病)还可由带毒的雌虫通过卵遗传至下代继续传播,对农业生产带来更大的损害。
