比萨主教堂,它的钟塔和洗礼堂,是意大利中世纪最重要的建筑群之一。它是为纪念1062年打败阿拉伯人,攻占巴勒摩而造的。
主教堂是拉丁十字式的,全长95米,有四排柱子。中厅用木桁架,侧廊用十字拱。正面高约32米,有四层空券廊作装饰,形体和光影都有丰富的变化。
钟塔(1174年)在主教堂东南20多米,圆形,直径大约16米,高8层,中间6层围着空券廊,后来,由于基础不均匀沉降。塔身开始逐年倾斜。但由于结构的合理性和设计施工的高超技艺,塔体本身并未遭到破坏,并一直流传至今,历时近千年。也就是享誉世界的比萨斜塔。
