This paper applied Peter Newmark’s theory of semantic translation and communicative translation into the study of Yang Xianyi’s and Hawkes’ translation approaches in their translating the sub-titles of the Dream of Red Mansion, and drew a conclusion that Yang Xianyi’s translation is more semantic and Hawkes’ is more communicative.
本文以彼得·纽马克的语义翻译和交际翻译理论为基础,通过研究杨宪益以及大卫·霍克斯在红楼梦中对章节标题的翻译,得出杨宪益更倾向语意翻译而霍克斯则倾向交际翻译。
