Hutiaoxia hydropower project to be constructed is a key one on the Shigu Yibin stretch of the Jinsha river and is located in a well known frequent strong earthquake zone from Zhongdian to Dali in South west China.

虎跳峡 在中国云南省丽江纳西族自治县石鼓东北。金沙江到此北转,下切3790米(比世界著名的美国科罗拉多大峡谷深1900多米),全长约16千米,水面宽30~60米,上下峡口间落差196米,两岸高山夹峙,峭壁陡立,峡内险滩密布。最险处是上、中、下三个虎跳,三个滩两岸的绝壁相距仅20多米,最狭处不过10多米。三个滩的江中心都横卧着一块巨石,相传有猛虎从巨石上一跃而到彼岸,虎跳峡由此得名,虎跳峡谷两岸山高险峻、峭壁千仞,从江边到峰顶呈立体气候,气温随高度升高由温变冷,植被由山麓往上,依次分布着阔叶杂木林,针阔混交林,冷杉林,云杉林、杜鹃灌木林和高山草甸,包括了从亚热带到寒带的多种植被类型。深山密林中有小熊猫、金丝猴、黑熊、林麝、豹等野生动物。江中有裂腹鱼等70多种鱼类。水力资源丰富。山上有金、银、钨、大理石等矿产资源。虎跳峡有玉壁金川之称。
