滑水是用快速摩托艇牵引一块宽板，运动员站在板上随浪平衡、滑行的一项水上运动。
1922年，一位出生于明尼苏达州的美国人拉尔夫?塞缪尔森最先练习滑水，以后滑水运动便逐渐在欧洲普及。1946年成立了世界滑水联盟。1959年在法国举行首届世界滑水锦标赛，以后每2年举行一次。1981年国际奥委会巴登巴登会议决定把滑水动列为奥运会项目。
在我国滑水运动是一个年轻的项目。1981年于武汉东湖举行了我国第1届滑水比赛。
